Craft skills for self-reliance and economic sustainability .
The main social problem faced by girls and mothers in our community is lack of self sustaining source of income that renders them vulnerable to acts of GBV in society. Umbrella of Hope Initiative (UHOPI) is addressing the challenge by empowering girls and mothers with skills that can enable them to become productive and self reliant. The skills enables girls and mothers to generate income hence access basic needs and avoid entire dependence on men.
The program is about training girls and mothers to use available resources to make shoes, bags, sanitary pads, necklaces, hats etc. The training offered depends on the participant’s level of experience and qualifications. The participant’s are also trained in soft skills and functional skills including communication skills, customer care skills, entrepreneurial skills ,numeracy etc. This enables them to cope in the competitive environment.
UHOPI creates networks with local markets and establishes other existing opportunities for the sale of the crafts products. Going forward, UHOPI intends to build centres of excellence in various communities for different skills in making and designing crafts using locally available resource
